Woven shibori is quite a complicated technique which was developed by Catherine Ellis in the early 1990s. This laborious weaving technique makes it possible to place “stitches” into the cloth while it is being woven on the loom. Those stitches are actually supplemental warp or weft threads which are then used to gather the fabric. Subsequent dyeing results in an image of the woven pattern. Woven Shibori is a beautiful amalgamation of handloom weaving and the traditional Japanese Shibori artform.
